Oscar De la Hoya Sticks To His Canelo KO Prediction
Aside from winning the fights, you can always count on two things whenever Floyd Mayweather steps into the ring: he will always have the full backing of Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, while Oscar de la Hoya will always pick him to lose, no matter the opponent.
Such has been the case for every one of Mayweather’s fights dating back to when Golden Boy became the lead promoter for his events, dating back to his explosive 10th round knockout win over Ricky Hatton in Dec. ’07. Since then, de la Hoya has been publicly let down by the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley, Victor Ortiz, Miguel Cotto and most recently Robert Guerrero.
This time around, however, de la Hoya swears he’s backing the right horse. The former six-division titlist, now a full time promoter, not only insists that Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will be the one to come aces on ‘The One’ when he faces Mayweather on September 14 in Las Vegas, but knows why this is the case rather than just throwing up hollow predicitions.
“He hasn’t even (yet) shown his full potential,” de la Hoya insists of his 23-year old prodigy, who faces Mayweather at a catchweight of 152 lb in their super welterweight championship. “We will see the very best of Canelo Alvarez on September 14.”
The Showtime pay-per-view event is regarded as the biggest possible fight that boxing can realistically offer today. Such energy has already translated into the largest live gate in boxing history, selling more than $19 million worth of tickets at the long-ago sold-out MGM Grand.
All eyes are now on whether or not the show can break the all-time pay-per-view record, set in May ’07 when Mayweather outpointed de la Hoya in a fight that drew more than 2.4 million buys.
While de la Hoya is on board with those who believe this will be the all-time best seller, he’s more convinced that his fighter will win and by knockout to boot.
Mayweather is unbeaten through 17 years as a professional, and with only one official knockdown in his career. That moment came only to steady himself after he himself threw a punch but hurt his hand in his May ’01 fight with Carlos ‘Famoso’ Hernandez. The closest he’s since come to being dropped was a blown call in his April ’06 win over Zab Judah and being rocked in the early rounds of an otherwise landslide win over Mosley in May ’10.
Still, de la Hoya believes Alvarez – who is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Austin Trout this past April – will win by knockout in a fight where Mayweather won’t see round nine.
“It’s my personal feeling how the fight will pan out,” de la Hoya says of his bold knockout prediction. “In boxing, anything can happen. Any punch can land and knock you out. My personal take is that Canelo has the strength and the talent to land that perfect punch.”

Canelo: Fans Know it Won't Be Easy For Either of Us
From the moment the announcement came that Floyd Mayweather would face Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, the forthcoming September 14 event has seemingly taken on a life of its own. From the record-breaking live gate to the hundreds of thousands of fans who came out in full force during the 10-city, two-country press tour, it was clear that the boxing public has fully embraced the biggest possible fight that could realistically be made today.
“We feel ‘The One’ will break all records,” insists Golden Boy President Oscar de la Hoya, who – as a fighter – still holds the all-time record for the highest-selling boxing pay-per-view event. His May ’07 split decision loss to Mayweather generated more than 2.4 million buys, and also at the time set the record for the largest live gate in boxing history.
The latter record has since been shattered, with Mayweather-Alvarez grossing more than $19 million in ticket sales for the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The matchup of unbeaten stars is now poised to make a run at the all-time pay-per-view mark.
“Everything we’ve received back so far indicates that ‘The One’ will be the one,” de la Hoya states.
As for why the fight has become such a phenomenon? That’s where promoter and fighter have differing opinions.
“It’s a fight that the fans wanted to see,” Alvarez bluntly states. “It’s a fight that they’ve asked for. It’s euphoric. They’re excited about the fight; they know it’s not going to be an easy fight for either of us.”
Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KO) is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Austin Trout in their 154 lb. title unification bout this past April. The event drew upwards of 40,000 fans at the Alamodome in San Antonio, underlining Alvarez’ massive popularity in Mexico and among Hispanic fight fans in the United States.
It also marked a rare occasion in which he and Mayweather (44-0, 26KO) weren’t paired on the same card, an absence that was felt in the pound-for-pound king’s landslide win over Robert Guerrero. The fight fared well at the box office when compared to all other events, but paled in comparison to lofty expectations set forth by the industry and—even if they won’t admit it—Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime, both of whom have a considerable vested interest in Mayweather’s career.
There are no such problems in drawing attention to this event, one where Mayweather fights twice in the span of four months, his quickest turnaround in more than a decade. Alvarez doesn’t believe that, or any other sidebar, to be a factor in why the upcoming show has captured the imagination of millions of boxing fans.
“It doesn’t matter that Floyd is fighting twice this year. He could have fought (next May) like he always does and it would still be as big. I think it’s because of the fight itself,” Alvarez believes.
His promoter believes there to be at least one sidebar factor that generates additional interest.
“People have hope; they strongly believe that Mayweather will get beat,” de la Hoya insists, in no short way pushing his own prediction that Alvarez will win by knockout. “That’s why it’s catching on. You have Canelo, who is fighting like a seasoned veteran (note: Alvarez has been a pro fighter for eight years, despite only being 23 years old). He’s in the best shape of his career and people have hope that he will be the one to finally beat Mayweather.”

Floyd Mayweather To Consider UK Shows/Fight in 2014
Floyd Mayweather has again expressed his desire to fight in England if he defeats Saul Alvarez on September 14. Mayweather, who is set to earn a record guaranteed purse of $41.5 million dollars, puts his 44-fight unbeaten record on the line against the exciting young Mexican and victory will enhance his reputation as the top fighter in the sport.
The American superstar has spoken before about a possible bout in London and has fresh ties with this country after Ashley Theophane, the former British light-welterweight champion, joined Mayweather Promotions.
Amir Khan would appear a likely foe for Floyd if he gets past his planned clash with Devon Alexander later this year and Mayweather has fuelled speculation about a future fight.
For the first time in a long time, Mayweather is fighting twice in one year. He plans to fight twice in 2014, also in May and September.
Speaking to the Sky Sports Toe 2 Toe podcast, Mayweather said: "Anything is possible, we just signed a fighter from London. He's unbelievable. He's been helping me, actually we've been boxing a little bit. He's tough, he's a tough competitor.
"Mayweather Promotions is looking to do a show in London after September 14th so we are going to take our roster over to London and set up shop."
Saul Alvarez is yet to suffer a defeat himself and some pundits have suggested that Mayweather is facing his toughest test in recent years.
But the 36-year-old multi-weight champion played down any suggestions that Alvarez will pose new problems to him.
"I can't say as of right now, but you know I'm never worried about no fighter," he said. My job is to be Floyd Mayweather, be smart, listen and you know 44 said they had the ingredients, they had the remedy on how to beat Floyd Mayweather. We're yet to see that so we'll have to see how the fight plays out on September 14."

Canelo vs. Floyd: Bayless to Ref, Judges Also Named
The referee for the Sept. 14 junior-middleweight title fight between Canelo Alvarez Floyd Mayweather at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be Kenny Bayless.
The other candidates to be the third man in the ring for that bout were Robert Byrd, Jay Nady and Tony Weeks.
The judges, meanwhile, will be Dave Moretti and C.J. Ross of Nevada and Craig Metcalfe of Canada.
The other candidates to score that bout were Adalaide Byrd, Burt Clements, Richard Houck, Robert Hoyle, Patricia Morse-Jarman and Glenn Trowbridge of Nevada; Anek Hongtongkam of Thailand; and Jurgen Langos of Germany.
There were no objections to these names from either fighter’s camp.
Bayless has been the referee for three of Mayweather’s previous fights, according to BoxRec.com. That website shows Bayless as being the ref for his win over Shane Mosley in 2010, his win over Oscar De La Hoya in 2007, and in his pro debut victory in 1996 over Roberto Apodaca. He has not worked any of Alvarez’s fights.
Moretti has been a judge for six Mayweather fights, including his 117-111 scorecard for Mayweather against Miguel Cotto in 2012, his 119-109 scorecard for Mayweather against Mosley, his 119-108 scorecard for Mayweather against Juan Manuel Marquez in 2009, and his 116-112 scorecard for Mayweather against Zab Judah in 2006, according to BoxRec.com. He also was a judge for Mayweather’s stoppage wins against Ricky Hatton in 2007 and Arturo Gatti in 2005. He has not worked any of Alvarez’s fights.
Ross is listed as being a judge for Mayweather’s sixth pro fight, a knockout of Bobby Giepert in 1996. She also had a 118-110 scorecard for Alvarez against Mosley in 2012.
Metcalfe is not listed as having worked a bout featuring either fighter.

De La Hoya, Canelo: Making Weight is Not a Problem
Neither Oscar De La Hoya nor Saul “Canelo” Alvarez are concerned about Alvarez paying a financial penalty for failing to make weight when he steps on the scale Sept. 13 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
De La Hoya and Alvarez assured reporters on a conference call Tuesday that Alvarez will comfortably get down to the contracted weight of 152 pounds for his WBA/WBC 154-pound title fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Sept. 14 at MGM Grand (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT; Showtime Pay-Per-View; $74.95 in HD).
“There is a penalty, but obviously Saul is going to have no problem making weight whatsoever,” De La Hoya, whose company promotes Alvarez, said regarding a clause in the Mayweather-Alvarez contract. “He made 153 against Austin Trout, with no problem. So Saul is going to have no problem whatsoever.”
Presented with a huge payday (reportedly $12.5 million guaranteed) and an incomparable opportunity, the 23-year-old Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KOs) didn’t hesitate to sign a contract to meet Mayweather (44-0, 26 KOs) below the usual junior middleweight championship limit of 154 pounds. Skeptics speculate that having to lose two more pounds will place Alvarez at an even greater disadvantage against the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
As a rigorous training camp winds down, however, Mexico’s Alvarez insists he feels fresh and isn’t concerned about having to shed two additional pounds prior to the most difficult fight of his eight-year pro career.
“It’s not going to bother me at all,” Alvarez said. “I feel good. I feel very, very good. I’ve been able to make the weight in the past. It’s not a problem. In fact, in my most recent fights I’ve been under [154 pounds] and I really don’t do much [extra] work. So I think it’s going to be fine. I feel very, very good right now. And in fact, I think it’s going to help me. I’ll be a lot faster.”

Re: entrenamientos, entrevistas y pesaje floyd vs canelo
